Amazing Tiki Bar Made From a 20' Shipping Container | Interview & Tour

Join us as we sit down with our past client, Josh Turner (JT), following the opening of his Tiki Bar made from a sea can. You won't believe your eyes when you see how well this container modification turned out! JT will take us through all the steps that brought his container bar vision to life. From conceptual computer renderings to serving tropical beverages on the beach -- JT's story is inspiring!

JT offers valuable advice to others who want to build their dream business out of a shipping container, and we also get the inside scoop on his exciting plans for the future. We had a blast at JT’s Beach Cafe & Tiki Bar located in Blackstrap Provincial Park and loved how he decorated his modified container. The food and drinks were an exotic treat that we'll never forget! We cannot wait to work with him again on his next mod.

today we're going to check in with our
0:01
past customer josh turner we worked with
0:03
him in designing a tiki bar that offers
0:05
food and drinks right along the beach in
0:07
this video we'll see firsthand the
0:09
advantages and obstacles in running a
0:11
business out of a shipping container

0:21
a little bit about me and my business is
0:22
i operate jt's beach bar and tiki bar
0:25
here at blackstrap provincial park we're
0:27
about 25 minutes from saskatoon we're
0:29
located right on the main beach and we
0:31
offer a full concession and we also
0:34
offer a new tiki bar with great tiki
0:36
cocktails beers and other foods
0:40
some of the best selling products are
0:42
signature cocktails that were developed
0:43
by lb distilleries so we have our tiki
0:46
god which is our famous one jt's
0:48
lemonade is another great one and if you
0:50
tried any of our margaritas they're
0:52
probably the best that you'll find
0:53
around
0:55
so i decided on a shipping container for
0:57
my tiki bar business because they're
0:58
secure they look a lot different there's
1:00
so many modifications that you can do
1:02
with them and throughout my travels in
1:04
europe i found that a lot of restaurants
1:06
were using them out there and so i
1:07
wanted to adopt that bring it back here
1:08
to saskatchewan we leave our container
1:11
bar here over the winter and that's why
1:12
we wanted to make something that was
1:14
really secure and could stand up to the
1:16
elements and that's why we did go with
1:18
the dc containers
1:20
we had the vision and we reached out to
1:22
container guys we were able to take our
1:24
vision of what we had the drawing that
1:26
we had and take it right into exactly as
1:28
you see here of this reality

1:58
how's business business has been
2:00
fantastic uh this addition we couldn't
2:03
keep up last year with the place that we
2:05
had and so we needed to make some
2:07
changes and when i came to you we had
2:08
that vision and what we wanted to do
2:10
also with being able to have that
2:12
addition of being a fully licensed
2:14
restaurant which is very rare it was
2:16
inside of sas park directly on the beach
2:19
i don't know how many places have it but
2:20
i know we're one of the few that are
2:22
able to offer that to campers so
2:24
business has been absolutely phenomenal
2:26
people have been loving the the idea
2:29
just the whole look of it the fact that
2:30
it's a c container bar i think it really
2:32
helps build that brand
2:34
my process to design the original was um
2:37
just through drawings on my own like
2:39
kind of putting some things on paper i'd
2:41
reached out to someone on fiverr that
2:43
could do some 3d renderings for me at
2:45
the time to try to put some things into
2:47
motion um get that going for when we
2:49
proposed that to the park all that was
2:52
accepted but there was a reality portion
2:54
of it that we didn't quite have without
2:56
coming to you what we looked at of the
2:58
vision and then going to you and your
3:00
engineering team and what would work was
3:02
the right thing to do for somebody who
3:04
wants to start out with a restaurant or
3:07
bar out of a shipping container i think
3:09
they need to know what they want to
3:10
provide do you just want to provide food
3:12
do you want to provide just drinks you
3:14
want to provide just ice cream for
3:15
people space is limited inside of a sea
3:18
container so you really need to be
3:19
focused on what you want and what is
3:21
going to work for you when i first had
3:23
the idea and presented it to the parks
3:25
they weren't maybe 100 sold on the the
3:27
sea container look uh within their park
3:30
but once i talk to them a little bit
3:31
about the security of it and what it
3:33
offers me that's 100 why i went with it
3:36
i mean we've got big strong doors i can
3:38
lock this place down very very well i'm
3:40
very happy with it very confident that
3:42
it's safe at night for us for next year
3:44
what we want to do is we want to extend
3:46
on another sea container a 40 foot seat
3:48
container
3:50
i still very happy that you brought this
3:52
up of that idea that you had with doing
3:54
the rooftop patio so we've wanted to do
3:56
the rooftop patio i showed you those in
3:58
the renderings when i first had them and
4:00
then with your idea about doing another
4:02
sea container above that i never even
4:04
knew that that existed so being able to
4:06
come and talk to you and and learn about
4:08
that and have your team draw those up
4:10
i'm looking forward to next year we're
4:11
gonna really blow this thing up thanks
4:14
for letting me come back here it's
4:15
pretty sweet what you've done with this
4:17
roll-up door here you uh built a bar out
4:20
in front i don't know if anyone's ever
4:21
thought of that but
4:22
the door still allows you to close up at
4:24
night and keep this place nice and
4:26
secure show me these kiosk windows i
4:27
want some positive or negative feedback
4:30
because we're updating the design right
4:32
now yeah these are one of the greatest
4:33
things that you installed what i really
4:35
like about them here is that they're
4:37
really easy to close up
4:43
and then when we start and we open up
4:45
our staff can come in and just open
4:46
those up like that the hardware inside
4:48
here allows it to be really secure and
4:50
we can put our locks and stuff on there
4:52
so even at night we're really confident
4:54
what i love that you guys did was create
4:56
this other one here as well
4:58
uh so we've got double the space it just
5:00
looks fantastic when you open up and
5:01
look at your view we needed to have
5:03
these i'm glad that you suggested these
5:05
and they've turned out absolutely
5:06
amazing and it makes for a perfect bar
5:08
top you know like it's the perfect
5:09
height for people to sit at provides a
5:11
little bit of shelter for people and
5:13
everybody really loves them so it was a
5:14
great addition for a bar one of the big
5:16
things too that you've added on is this
5:19
back part here now i'd like you to talk
5:21
a little bit more about the stress
5:22
system because that's your innovations
5:24
but just the look of it itself i had
5:26
seen that from one of your patios that
5:28
you had at at the yard and i couldn't
5:30
live without it so thank you for making
5:32
this happen and just don't even know how
5:33
you guys did that yeah our csm brackets
5:36
that are meant just for installing
5:37
unistrut inside containers to allow for
5:39
conduit and electrical to be run we just
5:41
figured hey like flat wall a dark wood
5:44
stain it looks awesome it's a nice
5:46
decorative feature you know to make the
5:48
vertical corrugations a bit prettier
5:49
with some horizontal flat architecture
5:51
so you're bringing an industrial
5:53
container and and modification
5:55
components and mixing it together with
5:57
all this sweet palm trees and whatever
5:59
else you got going on and it really fits
6:01
this works so well you know you you
6:03
touched on it a little bit with the
6:04
parks and i think the parks are starting
6:07
to get a little bit more um looking at
6:10
doing a little bit more forward thinking
6:11
about stuff so for them to do this with
6:13
us i think they were
6:15
used to do things a little bit normal
6:16
before but now they're really looking at
6:18
the things what's going to attract
6:19
people to come out to parks so they're
6:21
they're doing things like this they're
6:22
giving people like myself permission
6:24
helping to work with us to kind of think
6:26
outside the box a little bit more yeah
6:28
if they're more forward thinking and not
6:30
restricting progress then they're not
6:32
restricting fun right so the more they
6:35
can allow things like this the more
6:37
people are going to enjoy places like
6:39
this
6:41
it seems shipping containers are great
6:42
for setting up a shop like this on the
6:44
side of the road in a park or on the
6:46
beach it's nice how you can move them
6:48
from place to place and they won't
6:49
disrupt the land or landscape like a
6:52
permanent structure would i know i can't
6:53
wait to come back here with friends and
6:54
family it's sweet to have amenities like
6:57
this to grab lunch and have a cocktail
6:59
in a licensed facility and not worry
7:00
about packing
7:03
so there you have it we'd like to thank
7:04
the team at jt's tiki bar for allowing
7:07
us to come for lunch and get a tour of
7:10
this
7:11
sweet container tiki bar
7:13
we're excited for the next stages of the
7:15
project it's a nice little break for our
7:18
engineering team to work on cool
