Industrial Shipping Container Lube Station Built to Handle 50,000 Pounds

Follow along as Channing revisits a custom 40-foot shipping container that was converted into a complete industrial lubricant and fluid station. What started as a relatively straightforward container modification became an impressive setup containing an air compressor, bulk oil tanks, pumps, solvent, coolant, and a fluid distribution system that services an entire shop.

With nearly 50,000 pounds of equipment and liquids inside, this project also demonstrates how important structural support, ventilation, and proper container foundations can be.


Creating a Modular Shipping Container Interior

Container Modification World’s strut framing method was used along the back wall. Strut channel runs along the bottom and top, with additional vertical channels installed every fourth corrugation.

Plywood was installed between the strut channels, giving tradespeople two convenient mounting options. Equipment can be bolted directly to the strut using spring nuts or fastened into the plywood with wood screws.

This created a flexible interior that the customer could easily customize when installing piping, pumps, and other equipment.


Door Flashing Kits and Man Door

Container Modification World Door Flashing Kits were installed around the container doors to create a clean finished transition.

The original end doors were eventually decommissioned because electrical power enters the container at that location.

A Container Modification World Man Door was also installed on the end wall to provide everyday access without needing to operate the original cargo doors.

The electrical system includes a breaker panel, interior plugs, and lighting throughout the container.


Ventilating the Air Compressor Bay

The first bay contains a large air compressor installed on rubber isolation pads to reduce vibration.

Because the compressor produces significant heat, its exhaust was ducted through the container wall. A Container Modification World T16 Exhaust Fan was also installed with temperature and humidity controls to automatically remove excess heat.

Two 10-inch intake vents were installed lower on the container to supply replacement air. Together, the intakes and T16 Exhaust Fan create consistent airflow through the space.

Two 5,000-watt electric heaters were also installed to keep the insulated shipping container warm during colder weather.


Supporting 50,000 Pounds of Equipment

The remaining bays contain large steel tanks storing multiple viscosities of oil, along with separate stainless tanks for solvent and coolant.

With thousands of litres of liquid stored inside, the weight caused the container to sag enough that the side doors stopped operating properly.

To solve this problem, Container Modification World Container Shoes were installed beneath the corner castings, with one-inch Container Pads positioned between them.

This distributes the load along the container and keeps it level on the concrete foundation, helping the doors operate properly again.


Building an Industrial Fluid Distribution System

Air-operated pumps move oil and other fluids from the shipping container into stainless piping that runs throughout the customer's shop.

The piping is supported using strut channel and soft clamps, with hose reels and metering systems positioned throughout the building so technicians can access fluids where they are needed.

LED light fixtures were also installed outside the container between the side doors to provide additional lighting around the work area.


A Shipping Container Built for Industrial Use

This project shows how versatile a shipping container can become with the right modifications.

Using Container Modification World’s Door Flashing Kits, Man Door, T16 Exhaust Fan, 10-inch intake vents, Container Shoes, Container Pads, LED Light Fixtures, and strut framing system helped transform a standard 40-foot sea can into a highly organized industrial lubricant station.

More importantly, the finished project demonstrates how proper ventilation, framing, and foundation support can help a heavily modified shipping container continue performing reliably even under extreme loads.
