Building a 320 Sq. Ft. Shipping Container Garage With a Weldless Double-Wide Kit

Follow along as Channing builds a 320 sq. ft. shipping container garage by joining two 20-foot side-door containers with Container Modification World’s newest Low-Profile Double-Wide Kit.

These containers already offer excellent access because they have two full sets of side cargo doors. By connecting two side by side, the finished structure becomes 16 feet wide, with doors on the front, back, left, and right sides.

The entire system is bolt-on, with zero welding required.


Reinforcing the Floor Without Welding

One of the biggest changes in this version of the Double-Wide Kit is the new weldless floor connection.

Special folded steel profiles are installed along the lower side rails using 5/16-inch thread-cutting bolts and structural adhesive. The profiles are designed to work with both C-type and Z-type shipping container side rails.

When the containers are brought together, the profiles create a flat connection point where a center plate can be installed to tie the two floors together.

This helps reduce movement between the containers and creates a smoother finished transition through the center of the garage.


Adding Structural Support to the Header

Because these are standard shipping containers rather than MODBOX units, the upper side rail uses 60 mm tubing instead of the larger 60 x 80 mm rectangular tubing.

Container Modification World added Corner Gussets to help transfer loads from the upper header into the container corner posts and foundation.

The Low-Profile Double-Wide Header Kit uses separate inner and outer structural components. The inner header is installed before the sidewall corrugations are removed, helping keep the roof straight while the container is opened up.

The outer portion is installed later when the two containers are brought together.


Steel Stud Bracket Compatibility

The inner header profile was also designed to align with Container Modification World Steel Stud Brackets.

This allows builders to frame and insulate each container separately before transporting them to the final location.

Once they arrive on site, the two containers can be joined together, and only the center gap needs to be finished.

For more permanent installations, Channing also recommends considering a peaked or single-slope roof to help move water away from the center connection.


Sealing the Double-Wide Container

Once the containers are aligned, Bridge Fittings are tightened to pull the structures together.

Sealant is applied around the header before the Ridge Cap is installed. Structural rivets are then used to secure the cap because the entire connection remains weldless.

A Beauty Cap is also installed along the interior upper seam to cover the remaining corrugation welds and create a cleaner finished appearance.

The container roof is spray foamed to help control condensation inside the garage.


A 16-Foot Drive-Through Container Garage

The final result is a 16-foot-wide shipping container garage that is completely sealed and connected without welding.

With cargo doors on all four exterior walls, the space can be used as a drive-through garage or seasonal storage building.

Cars, small SUVs, quads, side-by-sides, and snowmobiles can all be stored inside while remaining protected from weather and rodents.
