DIY Shipping Container Partition Walls: A Lower-Cost Framing Method

Creating separate rooms inside a shipping container does not have to be expensive or complicated.

In this video, Channing shows a lower-cost way to build an insulated partition wall using steel studs and Container Modification World Steel Stud Brackets. The method is fast, simple, and works especially well for containers that will be fully spray-foamed.

For this 20-foot container, the front half will become an office while the back half will be used as insulated storage.


Framing the Partition Wall

Instead of using a full galvanized Partition Wall Kit, this build uses standard steel studs.

The entire partition wall is secured with Container Modification World Steel Stud Brackets, which help define the ceiling plane and wall position.

Once the brackets are installed, the wall can be framed across the container with steel studs and a bottom track secured to the floor.

Because the entire container will be insulated with closed-cell spray foam, the finished wall becomes very rigid once the foam locks everything together.


Why This Method Costs Less

The biggest advantage is cost.

A galvanized Partition Wall Kit is a more complete solution, but for an insulated container where a simple interior divider is all that is needed, steel studs can be much more affordable.

Channing estimates that this partition wall took roughly 30 minutes to frame.

That can make a major difference on larger projects where multiple partition walls are required.

For example, a storage facility or modular building project with many interior dividers could save significantly by using steel stud framing and Steel Stud Brackets instead of a full prefabricated wall system in every location.


Finishing One Side of the Wall

In this project, one side of the partition will remain unfinished while the office side receives an interior wall covering.

A steel stud was flipped around at the edge of the wall to create a flange for attaching the finished panels.

Container Modification World Re-Line Wall Panels can then be fastened to the framing to create a clean interior surface.

Depending on the application, plywood, drywall or another wall covering could also be used.

Installing plywood behind the finished wall surface can also provide more flexibility for mounting shelves, cabinets or equipment later.


When to Use a Galvanized Partition Wall Kit

The lower-cost steel stud method works best when the shipping container is being insulated.

For non-insulated containers, a galvanized partition wall kit may still be the better option.

That system is designed to connect with strut channel framing and provide a durable modular divider without relying on spray foam to help stiffen the structure.

The right method depends on how the finished container will be used.
