Hazardous Materials Storage Done Right With a Shipping Container
Proper hazardous materials storage requires more than simply putting drums, tanks, or used oil inside a shipping container. Ventilation, spill containment, structural support, and safe access all need to work together.
In this project, Channing walks through a shipping container modified into a municipal used oil recycling facility. The finished unit gives residents a dedicated place to drop off used oil while providing operators with a safer, cleaner, and more controlled environment for handling and storing it.
Building Secondary Spill Containment
One of the most important parts of this hazmat container is the secondary containment system beneath the oil tank.
Large galvanized containment pans were installed throughout the floor area and reinforced with heavy rectangular tubing. This additional structure helps support the weight of the tank while still allowing spilled liquids to flow between sections of the containment system.
Bar grating is installed over the pans, creating a walkable surface for the operator while allowing any spills to drain into the containment area below.
The pans provide approximately 1,900 litres of secondary containment capacity.
Installing a 4,500-Litre Used Oil Tank
The main storage tank holds approximately 4,500 litres of used oil.
Residents can leave containers of used oil in an exterior staging area. An operator can then bring the containers inside, walk up the built-in stairs, and pour the oil through the tank's large fill opening.
The double-wall tank provides its own level of containment, but spills can still happen during filling. That is why the surrounding containment pans remain an important part of the overall system.
Once the tank is full, the collected oil can be pumped out and recycled responsibly.
Adding a Composite Man Door
A Container Modification World 36-inch Composite Man Door was installed to provide operator access.
Composite doors are a great option for shipping container modifications because they provide a solid, well-insulated alternative to traditional steel door slabs.
The opening was cut before the final interior work was completed, helping simplify installation and reduce the amount of metal debris inside the finished containment system.
Ventilating a Hazmat Shipping Container
Ventilation is extremely important when storing hazardous materials because different vapours may collect at different heights.
Container Modification World BigAir® 45 Vents were installed high on the container walls, while additional ventilation is located lower near the cargo doors.
This helps encourage airflow through both the upper and lower portions of the container instead of allowing vapours to collect in one area.
Bug screens can also be added to the BigAir® 45 Vents in areas where smaller insects may otherwise enter through the openings.
Adding a Utility Pass-Through
A utility pass-through frame was used for the oil tank vent pipe.
This adaptable framing product can be used for plumbing vents, HVAC penetrations, and other utilities that need to pass through the corrugated container wall.
For this application, the tank vent exits through the frame and points downward to help prevent rainwater from entering the tank and mixing with the stored oil.
A Better Used Oil Storage Solution
This shipping container combines a strong steel shell, a 4,500-litre double-wall tank, reinforced secondary containment, ventilation and controlled operator access into one purpose-built recycling facility.
